Begin with a Loaded Brush

A pro painter often employs the ‘load and go’ method of painting and it’s actually one of their most crucial secrets. In contrast, homeowners or inexperienced painters take the ‘load and dump’ approach. In the ‘load and go’ approach, painters would load the bottom of their brushes with paint. They tap each side of the brush against the inside of the container to remove heavy drips before painting. On the other hand, any other person would drag the loaded brush along the sides of the container and wipe off most of the paint.

Push Paint to Prevent Runs

When the brush is loaded with paint, it can be very easy to make runs especially if you are prone to applying too much paint in the corners. To prevent runs, start brushing about half an inch away from the cut-in area. As the brush unloads paint, move over and drag the brush along the corner. Allow the bristles to gently push the paint against the cut-in area.

Although you may have to do this several times more to get a complete coverage, this should prevent excess paint in the corners and along the woodwork.

Make Use of Canvas Drop Cloths

Experienced painters don’t utilize bed sheets as drop cloths. Neither should you. The reason is that thin sheets won’t be able to stop splatter and spills from leaking to the floor. Although plastic can contain spills, it cannot prevent the paint from staying wet for a long time. That paint would usually find the bottom of your shoes, which would result to ugly marks on the floor.

So the best way to prevent paint from ruining your home’s floor is to use canvas drop cloths. One, these are not slippery and two, these can absorb splatters. You don’t even need to use a big cloth to fill the entire room, unless you are painting a ceiling. Moreover, a canvas cloth is easy to move.

Push Painter’s Tape with a Putty Knife

There’s the likelihood that you will discover paint bleeding through after peeling the tape off the woodwork once you’re done with the job. This could force you to scrape off the paint and do the painting job again.

To avoid this dilemma, apply tape over the wood. Use a putty tape and run it over the top, pressing down the tape for a good seal. This should stop the paint from bleeding.

Instead of using a masking tape, opt for the blue painter tape instead. A painter’s tape can be left on for days and still peel off cleanly. In fact it can be left on even for weeks. On the other hand, masking tape can leave behind residue which can be tough to clean off.

Use Sanding Pole to Cover Flaws

Having a perfectly smooth surface can make it a lot easier for you to have a perfect painting job, whether you’re working on the walls or woodwork. To have a smooth surface, use a sanding pole. Sanding can remove burrs and rough spots, and level out joint compound patches. It can also flatten ridges around the nail holes.

Use a fine grit sanding paper to sand the walls, starting from the baseboard to the ceiling. Don’t apply a lot of pressure on the sanding pole as its head can flip over, damaging the wall in the process.

Try “Boxing” for Consistent Color

The color of paint may vary between cans. For example, a yellow paint in can 1 may look paler than can 2. The difference may be noticeable when you open a new gallon and work on a wall that has been painted with the same color.

There’s one way to achieve consistency in color, a method called boxing. In this process, you will mix cans of paint in a five gallon bucket. This would ensure color consistency from start to finish.

You can even paint directly out of the bucket, eliminating the need to pour paint to a roller tray.

Wash Roller Covers Before Use

It doesn’t matter whether you have cheap or expensive roller covers. Washing these before their first use will remove the fuzz that comes off once you begin painting.

Wash the roller cover with water with liquid soap. Run your hands up and down the roller cover to remove any loose fibers. Then start using them right away. These are the secrets of pro painters you also need to learn if you want to do it right.
